Bengaluru: In chilling footage from Bengaluru, a Mercedes crashes into several vehicles before speeding off, leaving a two-wheeler rider dead on the spot. The police say the man driving the car is a surgeon.

Whether NS Shankar was drunk when he was driving will be confirmed by a blood test, the police say. He has been arrested and charged with "culpable homicide not amounting to murder" for the accident on Sunday afternoon.

A woman and a child who were also in the doctor's car were unhurt.

Dr Shankar, who is in his fifties, allegedly rammed five vehicles on a two-km stretch in south Bengaluru between the landmark Ashoka Pillar and the crowded Byrasandra road before hitting the wall of a house. A part of the accident was caught on CCTV camera.

"He drove his Benz car in a very rash and negligent manner in Jayanagar, hitting three motorcycles and two cars. In this distance he struck five times - and one person by name Ahmed Khan - he was standing with his wife - was killed," said MA Saleem, a senior traffic police officer.

Ahmed Khan's son Amir told NDTV that it all happened in an instant. "My father had stopped his vehicle and was standing there talking to my mother. Then in one or two seconds, suddenly, that car came and hit him. My mother's leg and arm is fractured - she is in hospital now," he said.

Dr Shankar was reportedly beaten up by an angry crowd before being handed over to the police. He is in hospital.

Police sources say he was not smelling of alcohol.

The Mercedes, believed to be brand new, was completely wrecked by the repeated crashes.
