Mamata Banerjee Declassifies Documents on Cabinet Meetings From 1938 To 1947

Mamata Banerjee Declassifies Documents on Cabinet Meetings From 1938 To 1947
Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government has declassified documents relating to 401 cabinet meetings from the period 1938 to 1947.

The files contain cabinet notes on the Quit India Movement, the Bengal famine and the Great Calcutta Killings. They also contain details about the partition.

"The Prime Minister is talking about Digital India. This is our way of doing it," Ms Banerjee said. "These documents may have been secret once but there is no need to keep them secret now. They contain history and people have right to know," she added.

Earlier this month, her government had released 64 files on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, the legendary freedom fighter whose death became one of India's biggest mysteries.

Asked if there was anything in the documents about Netaji, Ms Banerjee said, "you have to see the documents".

Around 130 files that could hold the key to the mystery of Netaji's disappearance in 1945 are believed to be with the Centre and still remain classified.

Ms Banerjee today again reiterated her request that the Centre should follow the state government's decision and declassify files related to the freedom fighter.

When asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promise to declassify Netaji files before he was elected PM, she said, "I feel that if you have said something before elections, you must you're your commitment."
