IIT Madras' faculty appointments to be investigated by CBI
Chennai: The Madras High Court has ordered a CBI probe into all appointments made at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras from 1995 to 2000. The premier investigating agency will investigate the correctness and legality of appointments made during this period.

Disposing a petition filed in 1996 by Dr Vasantha Kandasamy, an Associate Professor, the court has ordered her elevation as Professor in the Math Department.

Ms Kandasami was an Assistant Professor in 1995. Though she was qualified, Ms Kandasami  was denied appointment as Associate Professor. She was also ignored for the position of Professor in 1996. Two ineligible faculty members were appointed overlooking her candidature.

The court has quashed those two selection proceedings but has not altered the positions of the other two faculty members.

At the time of selection, one of them Dr Kamath had a postgraduate degree only in Physics while the job required postgraduate degree in Maths. The other member, Dr Rangan, had not secured a first class and has already retired.

Ms Kandasami has so far published 650 research papers and authored 81 books.
