2G war of words: Kapil Sibal vs Murli Manohar Joshi

New Delhi: After Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal claimed 2G losses calculation was 'erroneous' the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Murli Manohar Joshi lashed out and asked if Sibal has even read the report.

Joshi said "It seems Sibal has not read the report... the CAG report doesn't say just one figure of loss of Rs 1.74 lakh crore... it uses three models."

Joshi also said, "It was not right for a minister to make a statement like this about a CAG report while the PAC is looking at it."

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal, who replaced Raja after he was forced to resign in the aftermath of the 2G spectrum scam, described the CAG report on Friday as "completely erroneous".

While adding that he respects the CAG, Mr Sibal said, "We believe the exercise (by CAG) was fraught with very serious errors which resulted in a kind of sensationalism which has allowed the Opposition to spread utter falsehood to the people of India and we object to it."

Following Sibal's claims, the BJP came out with sharp criticism of his assumptions and rubbished the Government's approach.

The leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley said Sibal has "missed the basic point" as regards to the scam. "If the entire argument is that there was no loss to the exchequer then why did Raja resign from the Government?"

Claiming that Sibal was "confused with figures" Jaitley who is in Guwahati for the BJP National Executive meet reiterated that the claims made by the Government are only going to further expose more instances of corruption by UPA - II.
