Pune: Woman politician kidnapped by four

Pune: Ghamabai Gopinath Puri, a 45-year-old politician, who was visiting her brother for Raksha Bandhan, was kidnapped by four people on Tuesday in Thergaona.

This politically motivated kidnapping took place in Pune about 10 days after a similar incident took place in Lonavala.

A little over a week ago, newly elected Lonavala Gram Panchayat member Leelabai Wanjale and her family, including two children, were kidnapped and released after some time on the eve of sarpanch election.

Four political activists from Beed district were named as the accused in the complaint lodged by her sister-in-law Parubai Babasaheb Puri.

She named Shivaji Memane, Jalinder Shendekar, Sahdev Bhosle and Bharat Tambe in the complaint.

A case of kidnapping under sections of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the four.

Assistant Police Inspector Kale from the Hinjewadi police station said, "Ghamabai Puri is a local politician in Beed district. She was in Pune on Tuesday morning on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. The suspects barged into the house and pulled her out."

"While they were threatening Ghamabai of dire consequences if she did not vote in favour of a particular candidate, Parubai tried to intervene but was pushed aside by the culprits. Then the four took Ghamabai with them and fled in a white Indica car," he added.
