How a woman cashier stopped bank robbery

Coimbatore: A woman cashier of a nationalised bank at nearby Tirupur today foiled the attempt of two masked men to escape with Rs 14 lakh, which they had robbed at knifepoint.

Police said the two men, covering their faces with clothes and wearing helmets, entered the Canara Bank at Kongunagar, when cashier Saraswati was alone in the cabin, while others were having lunch inside.

One person threatened the cashier at knife point and took Rs 14 lakh. He then rushed outside to join his friend, who was ready with a motorcycle.

Saraswati immediately pressed the alarm button and alerted the staff, who rushed out and managed to pull down and caught the pillion rider and the bag containing the cash.

Some passers-by also chased the other person who was trying to flee on the motorcycle. The robber tried to escape threatening his chasers with a knife and injured a person in the process, police said.

Police are interrogating the pillion rider.
