Narendra Modi loses fight over lions, some will move to Madhya Pradesh
New Delhi: The Supreme Court today directed the Centre to translocate some lions from Gujarat's Gir forest to Kuno Palpur sanctuary in the neighbouring state of Madhya Pradesh. The case has seen two BJP ruled states fight it out over lions. Here are the top 10 developments in the case.

  1. The translocation of the Gujarat lions has to be done within the next six months.

  2. An expert committee will now decide on the number of lions to be translocated between the two states.

  3. The Supreme Court felt the lions should have a second home especially if an epidemic or fires wipe out the endangered species from one location.

  4. The two governments have been fighting it in the top court over the translocation of lions in the wake of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an environment group-Centre for Environment, seeking their translocation to Madhya Pradesh.

  5. The top court today rejected the Narendra Modi government stand which opposed the translocation. The Gujarat government had stated that Madhya Pradesh had failed to protect its tigers in Panna sanctuary and the lions from the Gir forest may meet the same fate.

  6. The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government claimed that the sanctuary was equipped with all the necessary infrastructure, expertise and environment for translocating the lions.

  7. The Gujarat government also said that the court should not interfere in the matter, and leave the decision to environment experts.

  8. The Centre supported Madhya Pradesh and wanted Gujarat to a few send lions to Madhya Pradesh.

  9. Senior Advocate PS Narasimha who was assisting the Court as Amicus Curiae was opposed to this translocation of the animals.

  10. The top court also directed the Centre not to import Cheetahs from Africa to Kuna sanctuary
