The next and last stop is City Hall—an announcement rings out as a train stops at the subway station in New York. With this video, Zohran Mamdani announced his arrival this morning, having won the mayoral election in New York City. The mayor's office is located at the City Hall.
The 34-year-old Democrat born to Indian and Ugandan immigrants is now set to become the first Muslim mayor of the Big Apple, besides etching his name in history as the first African-born and of South Asian heritage to hold the prestigious post. He will also be the youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on January 1.

Mamdani defeated former New York Governor and independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Local elections across the US, too, are seeing a blue wave.
In his first social media post after major media outlets declared him the winner, Mamadani shared a video from the City Hall station, with banner text reading, "Zohran For New York City."
Who Is Zohran Mamdani
Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, to acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani. He moved to New York City in his school years and became a naturalised US citizen in 2018.
He joined the Democratic Socialists of America in 2017. He won the Democratic primary in 2020 and went on to represent Queens' 36th District in the New York State Assembly. He was re-elected unopposed in 2022 and 2024. Mamdani is married to Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji.
Mamdani's election promises included freezing stabilized apartment rents and increasing publicly subsidized housing, in a move that he believes would make the city more affordable. Besides, he has also pushed for universal childcare, tuition-free education, fare-free buses, and city-run grocery stores. His policies included raising the corporate tax and increasing the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030.
