Washington: US Secretary of State John Kerry was in good condition on Tuesday after doctors set his broken right leg, which he injured in a cycling accident in France on Sunday, the US State Department said.

"Secretary Kerry is resting and in good condition after doctors set his broken leg today at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston," State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a brief written statement.

Earlier, the State Department said the surgery lasted several hours and went well with Kerry emerging from the operation at about 1:30 pm EDT.

Kerry, 71, broke his right femur on Sunday while cycling a portion of the Tour de France route in the Haute Savoie region of France, raising questions about how deeply he may be involved in Iran nuclear talks ahead of a self-imposed June 30 deadline.

Kerry had been in Geneva for negotiations on Saturday with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and after the accident has had to cancel planned visits to Madrid and Paris. He was flown to Boston on Monday on a US military aircraft.
