Sydney: A bus driver of Indian origin was covered in inflammable liquid by a passenger who burned him to death in front of horrified passengers in Australia today, the police said.

There was no apparent motive for the killing of 29-year-old as Manmeet Alisher, a well-known singer in the Punjabi community in Brisbane. Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said the attack did not appear to be a case of racism.

Police superintendent Jim Keogh told reporters that bystanders kicked down the back doors of the state-run bus to rescue about six passengers who were on board.

"It's lucky the whole bus didn't become engulfed in flames," he said.

A 48-year-old suspect was arrested at the bus stop and placed in custody.
