A massive 70-foot statue of Lionel Messi in Kolkata is set to be removed after it was seen swaying during moderate winds, raising serious concerns over structural stability and public safety. Installed in December last year and unveiled virtually by Messi during the much-publicised “GOAT Tour”, the statue quickly became a major attraction for football fans visiting the city. However, officials say inspections revealed structural deficiencies after recent winds exposed instability in the installation. Located at a busy junction near the airport in Laketown, the giant structure was feared to pose risks to pedestrians and nearby residents. Authorities have now decided to dismantle the statue barely five months after its inauguration.
