The West Bengal government has begun setting up holding centres to house illegal foreigners, including suspected Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants, ahead of deportation proceedings. Two such centres have already been established in Malda and Murshidabad, both districts located near the Bangladesh border. Officials say nine people identified as Bangladeshi nationals, including three women and six minors, have already been moved to the Malda holding centre. The move comes days after the state government directed all 23 district magistrates to identify locations for such facilities and intensify efforts to detect illegal migrants. Authorities say similar centres are expected to come up in other border districts across Bengal in the coming days.
