- Recent video exposes severe waste pollution tarnishing Khajjiar's eco-tourism image
- Tourists and locals contribute to littering due to poor civic sense and lack of dustbins
Khajjiar, also known as the ‘Mini Switzerland of India', is a picture-perfect hill station in Himachal Pradesh. Think breathtaking views, endless stretches of meadows and misty skies – every year, Khajjiar attracts tourists from all over the country who come here to breathe in the fresh mountain air and admire the beauty of the place.
However, a recent post on X has revealed a troubling reality behind the picturesque hill station. The user showed that the beauty of the destination is fading under piles of waste. According to the post, although tickets are issued in the name of ‘eco-tourism', the ‘eco' part seemed to be missing.

???? Khajjiar — called the “Mini Switzerland of India.” But what's the point of the title if the backyard is turning into a dumping site?

Tickets are issued in the name of an Eco Tourism, but where is the “eco” when plastic bottles, wrappers, and waste are thrown in the backside… pic.twitter.com/ZAfzwTBkNz
The video showed that the entire area was filled with plastic bottles, food wrappers and other types of waste. What was supposed to be a scenic valley with clear skies and lush greenery had turned into a garbage dump with little to no proper maintenance. According to the user, the main reasons behind the pile-up of waste were the poor civic sense of both locals and tourists, as well as the lack of dustbins.
Sharing the clip, the user asked, “Khajjiar – called the 'Mini Switzerland of India.' But what's the point of the title if the backyard is turning into a dumping site? Tickets are issued in the name of ecotourism, but where is the ‘eco' when plastic bottles, wrappers, and waste are thrown in the back to hide the mess?"

He further pointed out, “Tourism cannot mean bringing vehicles, taking photos, and leaving garbage behind. Without stronger accountability and effective enforcement, change remains only on paper. Khajjiar deserves admiration, not neglect.”
Soon after the video was posted, people flooded the comments section to react to the condition of the valley. One user highlighted, “Noticed the sound pollution in the background? So land is polluted, the environment is polluted, and even the noise is polluted. So much for ecotourism when 80% of traffic flow is rife and rowdy, lacking basic civic sense.”
One local responded, saying, “This is everywhere in Himachal, and we locals are equally responsible for this mess! In our greed we are ignoring mother nature.”
Someone else shared their personal experience, noting, “Went in November last year. We saw 3 dustbins, but they were full to the top – no place to throw even an ice cream stick… First provide dustbins.”
Another user questioned the lack of strict anti-littering measures, saying, “Why can't we have a dedicated police force, especially for such behaviour, which will collect fines on the spot?"
An individual suggested, "The real solution is literacy, civic pride, and accountability. People should feel ashamed of littering such beautiful places. Also, small plastic pouches and single-use packaging need strict bans; they are the biggest source of scattered waste in tourist spots.”
Locals and nature lovers worry that if people continue filling the valley with garbage and polluting the area, Khajjiar's title as the “Mini Switzerland” may soon lose its meaning.
