- Shri Hemkund Sahib is a high-altitude Sikh shrine at 4,632 metres in Uttarakhand Himalayas
- The site holds religious significance for Sikhs and Hindus, attracting thousands annually
- Access is from late May to October, with mandatory online registration for pilgrims and vehicles
Some journeys test your endurance, and then some journeys transform you. The trek to Shri Hemkund Sahib, perched high in Uttarakhand's Garhwal Himalayas, manages to do both. Situated beside a glacial lake and surrounded by seven snow-capped peaks, this sacred shrine is not just a destination - it is an experience of faith, resilience and breathtaking natural beauty. Every summer, thousands or even lakhs of pilgrims and trekkers take on the challenging route to reach one of the world's highest gurudwaras, drawn by its spiritual significance and serene setting.
About Hemkund Sahib
Standing at an altitude of 4,632 metres (15,197 feet), Shri Hemkund Sahib is among the highest Gurudwaras in the world. The striking white marble structure, built in a unique pentagonal design, overlooks the pristine Hemkund Lake, whose still waters reflect the surrounding mountains.
Pilgrims often take a holy dip in the icy lake despite the freezing temperatures, considering it an act of purification. Inside the Gurudwara, the Guru Granth Sahib is recited daily, and a langar is served to devotees - an effort that continues even in extreme high-altitude conditions.
Religious Significance Of The Yatra
Hemkund Sahib holds immense significance for the Sikh community as it is associated with Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, who is believed to have meditated here in his previous life. The shrine's tranquil setting amplifies its spiritual aura, making it a revered pilgrimage site.
For Hindus, the site is equally important. The nearby Lakshman Temple is believed to mark the place where Lakshman, the younger brother of Lord Rama, meditated. This dual religious importance draws both pilgrims and trekkers seeking spiritual and natural solace.
