Sun-kissed temples, bustling markets and a culinary paradise await travellers in Thailand. But, what if you're a vegetarian? Conquering the country's meat-centric cuisine can be a challenge. Chef Neha Deepak Shah found a solution during her visit to Thailand. A viral video posted by her on Instagram reveals how you can find vegetarian restaurants in Thailand with the help of a sign. Look out for a yellow sign with a red letter (pronounced "je"). It indicates vegetarian or vegan food, especially during the Vegetarian Festival.
This sign is widely used in restaurants and on packaged food to signify that the items are suitable for vegetarians and vegans. While generally indicates vegetarian food, it often implies a stricter vegan approach, excluding not only meat but also certain vegetables like nightshades. Jae's food usually doesn't even have onion or garlic, so if you want it in your food, just ask for it.

Here are some other tips and tricks for vegetarians visiting Thailand:
1. While ordering, lead every conversation you have with waiters by stating your special diet. To communicate your dietary preferences, say "Gin Jay" (hard G, pronounced "gimp jay") for vegan or strict vegetarian, or "Mang-sow-ee-rat" for vegetarian options that may include eggs, dairy, and fish sauce.
2. For added safety, consider carrying a card with "I'm vegetarian" in Thai or "I'm vegan" in Thai to show waiters or vendors, followed by a smile and polite demeanour.
3. Use Google Translate or a similar app to sound out Thai words, helping vendors understand your dietary needs. Type, translate, and play the words to ensure clear communication.
4. Research Thai dishes that fit your vegan or vegetarian diet before arriving, as some unexpected dishes may contain animal products. Familiarise yourself with options like Som Tam (green papaya salad) to confidently order safely.
5. Visit Thailand's farmers' markets for a stress-free dining option. You can pick up fresh fruits, veggies, and steamed rice to create a healthy meal yourself. Enjoy the country's abundant produce and take charge of your diet.
