- Indian family denied boarding at Bengaluru airport over Peru visa dispute despite valid tickets
- Peru allows visa-free entry for Indians with valid visas or residence in select countries since 2017
- Visa exemption requires a six-month valid US, UK, Canada, Australia, or Schengen visa or residence
Peru continues to rank high on many travellers' wish lists, thanks to its rich blend of ancient history, dramatic landscapes and culinary acclaim. From the iconic ruins of Machu Picchu to the biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest, the country promises an immersive travel experience. However, a recent travel controversy has highlighted how even seasoned or well-prepared travellers can face unexpected hurdles at the airport.
An Indian family's holiday in Peru, planned months in advance and backed by business-class tickets worth nearly Rs 49 lakh, was abruptly halted at Bengaluru airport over a visa dispute, The New Indian Express reported. The case is now being examined in court, raising important questions about visa-free travel to Peru and the rules Indian travellers must clearly understand before flying.
What Happened At Bengaluru Airport
On June 19, 2024, J S Sathishkumar, chairman of a medical institution based in Salem, Tamil Nadu, was scheduled to fly to Peru with seven members of his family. The group held non-refundable business-class tickets for a round trip, with their return journey planned for July 3, 2024.
However, shortly before departure from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, airline staff denied the family boarding.
According to the airline, the travellers did not possess a valid Peruvian visa. The incident soon escalated, with an FIR being registered against the CEO and COO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The matter is now under judicial consideration.
Indian Traveller's Claim: Was A Separate Visa Required?
Sathishkumar has challenged the airline's interpretation of Peru's entry requirements. He has stated that Indian passport holders can travel to Peru without obtaining a separate Peruvian visa if they meet certain conditions.
His claim is based on official guidelines that allow visa-free entry for Indian nationals who hold valid visas or permanent residence permits from select countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada or countries within the Schengen area.
Peru Visa-Free Entry for Indians: What Official Guidelines Say
As per information published by the Embassy of the Republic of Peru in India, individuals holding Indian passports have been eligible for visa exemption since March 27, 2017. This exemption applies to temporary visits for tourism or business purposes, provided specific criteria are met.
1. Indian nationals do not require a separate Peruvian visa if, at the time of entry, they hold a valid visa with a minimum validity of six months from any of the following:
- United States of America
- Canada
- United Kingdom
- Australia
- Any Schengen-area country
This applies even if the visa has not been used previously.
2. Alternatively, Indian passport holders who have permanent residence in any of the above-listed countries are also eligible for visa-free entry into Peru.
The maximum permitted stay under this arrangement is up to 180 calendar days within one year, whether as a single visit or multiple entries. The final duration of stay is determined by Peruvian immigration authorities at the port of entry.
The Embassy of the Republic of Peru in India also advises all travellers to ensure their passports are valid for at least six months from the date of entry into the country.
Important Things to Check Before Booking Your Trip
While visa-free entry may sound straightforward, travellers are advised to double-check several details before flying:
- Ensure that your US, UK, Canada, Australia or Schengen visa has a validity of at least six months at the time of entry.
- Confirm the visa category, as most countries accept only tourist or business visas. Transit, student or certain temporary visas may not be recognised.
- Carry proof of prior visa use if available, such as passport stamps or travel records, as immigration officials may request them.
Documents You May Need to Show at Immigration
Whether entering Peru with a visa or using the visa-free exemption, travellers should be prepared to present supporting documentation at immigration, including:
- Proof of onward or return travel, such as flight or bus tickets
- Documentation proving eligibility to enter the next destination, if not returning directly to India
- Recent bank statements to demonstrate sufficient funds for the duration of stay
- A passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival
- Supporting travel documents, such as hotel bookings and travel insurance
Understanding The Entry Procedure
Travellers arriving in Peru are required to complete an embarkation form, officially known as the Tarjeta Andina de Migracion (TAM). This form records entry and exit details and may be provided during the flight or at the border. The system has moved online and is now referred to as the TAM Virtual.
A Reminder For Indian Travellers
The recent airport incident serves as a reminder that visa rules, particularly those involving exemptions, can sometimes be misinterpreted or inconsistently enforced. Travellers are advised to carry printed copies of official guidelines from embassy websites and confirm entry requirements directly with airlines before departure.
