Vaishno Devi Pilgrimage

Nearly three weeks after the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district was reopened for pilgrimage, the shrine board has increased the quota for pilgrims from outside the Union Territory to 500 daily, officials said on Saturday.

Pilgrims riding on ponies to the cave shrine of Mata Vaishnodevi in Trikuta hills of Jammu and Kashmir will now be equipped with helmets, knee and elbow guards to prevent injuries.

A day after fire broke out in Trikuta Hills of Katra district leading to suspension of the Vaishno Devi yatra (pilgrimage), the Indian Air Force (IAF) has managed to contain the fire. The yatra has also resumed today.

The Vaishno Devi yatra has been temporarily suspended due to overcrowding in last evening. "The pilgrimage to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine has been suspended from the Katra base camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district due to an unprecedented rush of pilgrims," an official of the cave shrine said.

The Vaishno devi pilgrimage was today suspended following landslides triggered by heavy rain in Jammu and Kashmir, even as a 10-year-old boy injured yesterday succumbed to injuries, taking the toll in the mishaps due to inclement weather to five.

A Vaishno Devi-bound pilgrim died, apparently after suffering a heart attack, in Katra town of Reasi district on Monday.

Restrictions under section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc) have been imposed in Katra, base camp of Mata Vaishnodevi Cave shrine in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir in view of the protests by labourers and potters against opening up of the new battery car track to the pilgrimage.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), which looks after the famous Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, launched an online registration facility on Monday for undertaking the pilgrimage.

Nearly 41 lakh devotees from across the country have paid obeisance at the cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, marking an increase of over four lakh from the corresponding period last year.
