Supreme Court On Cow Vigilantism

The Supreme Court agreed to hear a plea filed by a women's organisation seeking directions to states to take immediate action in consonance with a 2018 verdict of the apex court to effectively deal with incidents of lynching against Muslims.

The Supreme Court has pulled up the Centre and the states over the issue of cow vigilantism and mob killings. The top court on Monday sought a response from the states on compensation for the families of mob killing victims.

The Supreme Court today took note of the July 20 lynching incident in Alwar district in Rajasthan, after it had issued a slew of directions on dealing with cow vigilantism and asked the state government to file its response about the action taken in the case.

On mob killings in the name of cow protection, the Supreme Court today said no citizen can take the law into their hands and the government must act. "It is the state's duty to ensure order and prevent mobocracy," the court said today.

The incidents of cow vigilantism are not acceptable and it's for the states to ensure that such events don't happen, Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra said today.The Supreme Court, which was hearing petitions on cow vigilantism, also warned against linking mob violence to religion or caste and said "a victim is a victim".

Three states - Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh - have received contempt notice from the Supreme Court for allegedly failing to prevent incidents of cow vigilantism despite an order last year to do so. The states will have to reply to the notice by April 3.

Cow protection goes beyond religion and "pious" cow protectors needn't worry or get distracted due to "well-intentioned statements" by highly-placed persons in the government or the Supreme Court, Mohan Bhagwat, who heads the ruling BJP's ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh or RSS, said,
