Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has requested the central government to increase the quota of Haj pilgrims from the state. In a letter written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday, Mr Yadav requested that the state be allowed to send at least 32,532 people on Haj, maintaining the quota of 2011.

Saudi Arabia has announced an additional quota of 10,000 Haj devotees for India. "The entire lot of these 10,000 seats have been transferred to Haj Committee of India, Mumbai," the external affairs ministry said on Thursday.
