72-Year-Old Man Dies Of Heart Attack On The Way To Jayalalithaa's Rally

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at an election campaign for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls, in Tirunelveli on Thursday.

Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu: A 72-year-old man died of a heart attack while on the way to Tirunelvelli in Tamil Nadu, where Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was scheduled to address an election rally in the evening, the police said on Thursday.

Rajamani, who collapsed just before reaching the election rally venue, was immediately rushed to a government hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa addressed the election meeting around 4.30 pm on Thursday.

Rajamani, a resident of Puliangudi village, is the sixth casualty at the Chief Minister's rallies ahead of Monday's election. Last month, five persons had collapsed and died due to suspected heat stroke at various places, including Salem and Dharmapuri.

Opposition parties have accused the AIADMK of making people to wait under hot sun for hours, which, they say, have resulted in such incidents. They have also petitioned the National Human Rights Commission and the Election Commission, demanding that this practice be stopped.

The Election Commission has advised against meetings at peak hours given the heat.
