Chennai:
A flood alert has been sounded in a few areas of Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Karur district of Tamil Nadu as 30,000 cusecs of surplus water from the Amaravathi Dam in the Tiruppur district have been discharged into the Amaravathi River.
In Karur, water has entered a few villages as the river is in spate. As an abundant precaution, the district administration has asked people in low lying areas to move to safer locations.
"The situation is under control and most people have returned to their places" said Jayanthi, District Collector of Karur.
30 people have died across Tamil Nadu due to rain related incidents across the state. Roads covering around 5000 km have suffered damage.
"Around two hundred acres of crops have been affected here. The government should do something about this," says a farmer in Karur.
Authorities are yet to assess crop damage.
The state has received 35 per cent more rain than the normal quantum. DMK Chief Karunanidhi has slammed the state government for what he calls "lack of relief work." However, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam claims the state is fully geared and that a team of senior bureaucrats and ministers are on the job, visiting all districts.
