DMK quit UPA because it 'had no choice': Kanimozhi
Chennai: DMK chief M Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi has said her party pulled out of the Congress-led ruling coalition in protest against the government's position on a United Nations resolution on war crimes in Sri Lanka because it "had no choice."

The resolution, the Rajya Sabha MP said, had nothing of what the DMK wanted. "DMK expected the Indian government to support this resolution and take it forward but unfortunately it did not happen. The final resolution has come and nothing of what was expected is there in it. So I think the DMK had no choice but to decide to pull out," she said.

The vote against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Session is scheduled for March 21-22 in Geneva.

The DMK wants India to introduce stronger language, including the word "genocide" in the resolution. But sources say the government is unlikely to back the term "genocide." It may however ask for an independent inquiry against Sri Lanka.
