Wikus Ceronie was on his way home when the incident occurred
The video shows the hippo ramming into the car again and again
The bonnet of the car was damaged but luckily, no one was injured
A video shared by the 'Kruger Sightings' YouTube channel shows the heartstopping moment a hippo, standing on a bridge, turns around and rams into the car.
Welding inspector Wikus Ceronie was on his way home on November 25 when the incident occurred. "This is my first time ever working in Mozambique and I was on a jolly journey back home to South Africa," he told Kruger Sightings.
That's when he spotted the animal and, fascinated, began filming it. "There were people walking around in the nearby vicinity so I automatically assumed this hippo was used to humans," he added.
The hippo, though, wasn't ready for its close up and charged at the car, attacking it over and over again. "I braced myself as I realized he wasn't going to stop. He hit the bakkie head on and then tried biting it," Mr Ceronie, 26, told Kruger Sightings.
The video shows how all of this transpired and makes for quite a frightening watch. You can actually hear Mr Ceronie screaming.
"This was terrifying for me because I realized I had nowhere to go and no time to do it in. Beside me was a 50m drop so had he hit me on the side I have no doubt the car would have rolled down the embankment," he told Kruger Sightings.
The video also shows the damaged bonnet of the car but luckily, no one was injured. Take a look at the video below:
