Three dead, at least 31 injured after six coaches of Kasara-Mumbai train derail

Mumbai: Three people died and at least 31 others were injured, four of them seriously, after six of the 12 coaches of the Kasara-Mumbai train derailed in Maharashtra's Thane district. The Kasara local was coming to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) in Mumbai. The train reportedly derailed after a landslide near the tracks.

Shortly after the local train derailed, it was hit by the Mumbai-Gondia Vidarbha Express which was going towards Kasara. Following the collision, the engine of the Vidarbha Express too derailed, but nobody in the train was injured.

The General Manager of Railways, along with senior officials, rushed to the spot immediately after. However, the rescue operations were hampered due to rain.

Rail traffic on the line was severely affected. Trains like the Howrah Mail, Kurla-Patna, Kushinagar Express and Dadar-Varanasi were diverted via Vasai road. The Mumbai-Nagpur Duranto Express was halted at the Washind station for over an hour. There was confusion among passengers as no information was given out to them. The Washind station is about 90 kilometres from the CST.

The Railways announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the deceased; Rs 1 lakh for the grievously injured and Rs 25,000 for the injured.
