Mumbai:
Four days after an MBA student allegedly ended her life by jumping off the sixth floor of a building in suburban Santacruz, her boyfriend whom she secretly 'married' was arrested for allegedly abetting her suicide, the police said on Thursday.
According to the police, the accused Umashankar Khushwah had allegedly been harassing the victim to quit studies and move to his village with him as his wife.
The accused was produced before a local court which remanded him to police custody till December 10.
The 24-year-old victim, Sonal Bagade, had jumped off the sixth floor balcony of Shree Samarth Building at Santacruz East on Sunday, December 2.
According to the Vakola police, Khushwah met Sonal Bagade via the internet around two months ago, following which they started speaking over phone.
While her divorced mother who works as a nurse stayed out working during the day, Khushwah used to visit Sonal's residence at D'Mello Compound in Santacruz.
About a fortnight before Sonal committed suicide, the duo "married" at the girl's residence.
"Khushwah had been forcing Sonal to give up her studies and live with him in his village in Uttar Pradesh as his wife. She was frustrated due to this, as she wanted to continue her studies. The two used to often fight over the matter," an officer at Vakola police station said.
The police said that Khushwah admitted harassing the girl that led to her taking the drastic step.
Khushwah, the police said, is a native of Uttar Pradesh living in Gamdevi, South Mumbai and working in an Andheri-based private firm.
After learning about the girl's "marriage", Sonal and her mother moved to a relative's sixth floor rented apartment at Samarth Society in Santacruz East where she ended her life.
