Caught cheating in exams, teen girl goes missing
Mumbai: The parents of a First Year BCom student from Tilak College, Navi Mumbai, are at their wits' end trying to trace their daughter, who went missing 11 days ago. Debolina Duttaroy (18) disappeared after she was caught copying and the teacher asked her to leave the college.

Debolina, a resident of Nerul, reached college for her exam around 8.30 am on October 11. When she did not return home till 11 am, her father asked her brother Chirodeep to check with her college. Chirodeep met Principal Ajit Kurup, who told him about the cheating incident. Kurup suggested a police complaint be lodged. "I approached Nerul police station and filed a missing report," said Chirodeep.

The matter took an unhappy turn when on October 13 a man called up Chirodeep from Debolina's mobile number, informing that he had witnessed the girl jump off the Vashi Bridge. The family rushed to the spot with fire brigade officers and Vashi police, but Debolina was not found.

The caller had identified himself as a scrap dealer and resident of Vashi gaon. In the telephonic conversation he said he had recovered Debolina's cellphone and called Chirodeep after drying the SIM card in the sun. Later, three fishermen claimed they saw her body in the sea near Mankhurd.

"We narrated the entire sequence of events to the police, but they were not able to locate the caller or the fishermen," said Chirodeep.

Debolina is a native of Bihar. She had come to Navi Mumbai for the first time in June this year and taken admission in Tilak College.

"We have registered a missing complaint. We are trying our best, but so far she is untraceable. Two fishermen and a scrap dealer had seen her in the Vashi creek," said Rajkumar Chafekar, senior inspector, Nerul police station.
