BMC Election Results 2017: BMC is Asia's richest civic body (File)
The BMC or Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election is more than civic body polls for parties in India's financial capital. The Shiv Sena and the BJP, long-time allies, contested separately and fought bitterly against each other. Some 21,620 candidates contested the 5,777 seats up for grabs in the 10 municipal corporations including BMC, for which the elections were held in two phases. Apart from Mumbai, the municipal corporations which went to the polls were Thane, Ulhasnagar, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Akola, Amravati and Nagpur. But the focus was on the BMC, which has a gigantic budget to beat that of many other civic bodies and even states.
Here are the top 5 facts about BMC
BMC, one of the 10 civic bodies in Maharashtra, has been headed by the Shiv Sena for two decades.
Its budget is more than Rs 37,000 crore, higher than many states and about the same as 10 civic bodies, in cities that include Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Pune and Ahmedabad.
More than half the budget goes into salaries and pension of over one lakh employees.
The Sena owes its political origins to the BMC, which is why it's so territorial about the corporation.
The BMC's elected corporators only have legislative powers and the party that wins elects the mayor. The executive powers are with the commissioner, appointed by the state go.
