- A Sub-Inspector allegedly lured the 6-year-old inside the checkpost
- Villagers barged in after hearing the minor scream
- The accused was later arrested and an inquiry into the incident launched
The child was playing outside the checkpost at Bhanwarka village near Kemri town -- around 350 km from the state capital Lucknow -- when she was allegedly lured inside by the policeman. Soon after, hearing her screams, villagers barged into the police station and found Tejveer Singh trying to force himself upon the child, reported news agency AFP.
Around 200 villagers later surrounded the police check post and held protests. The protest was called off only after Superintendent of Police Vipin Tada arrived at the spot and Tejveer Singh was arrested.
A breath analyser test showed that the policeman had consumed alcohol.
The child's parents have lodged a complaint and a First Information Report was filed against the sub-inspector under an attempt to rape as well as under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act.
The child has undergone a medical examination and the report is awaited.
Around 20,000 cases of sexual assault against minors have been reported in the country in 2015, according to government data.
