A policeman had allegedly attempted to rape a 6-year-old inside a police checkpost in Rampur district of Uttar Pradesh. The sub-inspector, Tejveer Singh, was caught by the villagers and he has been arrested.

The child was playing outside the checkpost at Bhanwarka village near Kemri town -- around 350 km from the state capital Lucknow -- when she was allegedly lured inside by the policeman. Soon after, hearing her screams, villagers barged into the police station and found Tejveer Singh trying to force himself upon the child, reported news agency AFP.

Around 200 villagers later surrounded the police check post and held protests. The protest was called off only after Superintendent of Police Vipin Tada arrived at the spot and Tejveer Singh was arrested.

A breath analyser test showed that the policeman had consumed alcohol.

The child's parents have lodged a complaint and a First Information Report was filed against the sub-inspector under an attempt to rape as well as under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act.

The sub-inspector is currently lodged in jail and an inquiry into the incident will be launched, Mr Tada was quoted as saying by AFP.

The child has undergone a medical examination and the report is awaited.
