Why Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Look Had The Number 64

Bad Bunny stepped into the NFL spotlight at Super Bowl 60 and turned the halftime show into a smooth mix of music, fashion and personal meaning. The global star performed on February 8 in Santa Clara, California, and reminded viewers that when it comes to big moments, he always thinks beyond the stage.

At the start of his Super Bowl performance, Bad Bunny appeared in a field of sugar cane, dressed head to toe in soft, off-white tones in a custom Zara look. His shoes, pleated pants and football jersey were all close to the pale colour of the field sidelines. It was quiet fashion, but very intentional.

The football jersey stood out the most. It had padded shoulders like a linebacker's jersey but was cropped just a few fingers above the waist. On the back of the jersey was the name “Ocasio,” taken from his full name, Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio. Below it sat the number “64,” which quickly became a talking point online.

As the performance went viral, fans began guessing what the number meant. Some thought it could be linked to his mother's birth year.

Others connected it to his 2020 album “El Último Tour del Mundo,” which became the first Spanish-language album in 64 years to top the all-genre Billboard 200 chart. A more serious theory connected it to Hurricane Maria, which devastated large parts of Puerto Rico.

The real reason, however, was personal. As per a New York Times report, a publicist later confirmed that 64 refers to 1964, the year Bad Bunny's late uncle Cutito was born. According to the publicist, Cutito was the person who taught the singer “much of what he knows about the NFL.” The jersey was a quiet tribute, meant to honour his uncle's influence and memory.

At the Super Bowl, Bad Bunny did not rely on loud logos or flashy styling. Instead, he chose meaning, memory and clean design. The result was a performance look that felt personal, stylish and very much his own.
