Storyteller and poet extraordinaire aren't enough to describe Roald Dahl. The British author brought magic to every word he penned. Not only did he win many awards in the field of literature, Roald Dahl gave us some of the most wonderful quotes and continues to be one of the world's most popular authors. His humour with a dark edge is directed not only at children but adults as well and they continue to remain classics even after decades. On Roald Dahl day; the birth anniversary of the late author, here are 5 of his delightful books that men and women of every age continue to adore.

1. Matilda

Possibly one of Dahl's most famous works, Matilda is based on an intelligent little girl who finds herself with powers that are far beyond her years. Her life with these powers and how she harnesses them are what the plot revolves around. Matilda was first remade into a movie in 1996 and later, a musical.

2. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory

Even those who haven't heard of the author have probably heard of or seen the movie based on this book. It revolves around young Charlie, his relationship with his family and how he ends up touring the chocolate factory he had only dreamed of. The book was made into numerous movies, musicals and games as Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.

3. Tales Of The Unexpected

What many don't know is that Roald Dahl is far from your average children's writer. In all his work, his plots are dotted with humour sometimes, with a dark twist. This book of short stories highlights that. Directed at adults, it's a mixture of works that bring fantasy and mystery to the forefront.

4. Fantastic Mr. Fox

Though the premise of a talking fox may seem childlike, once you did deeper, you'll find that it's hardly so. It speaks of a shrewd fox and his effort to outsmart a group of farmers who are out to get him. Fantastic Mr. Fox was made into a Wes Anderson movie in 2009 and included Meryl Streep and George Clooney in the voice cast.

5. The BFG

The BFG is a heartwarming story of a young girl and her adventures with a giant man, who is known as Big Friendly Giant or BFG. It was dedicated to Dahl's late daughter Olivia and has seen comic strips, plays and movies been based on it.
