If there was one ceremony where Margot Robbie was guaranteed (or so we thought) to rock a pink Barbie-inspired outfit after a successful run-up from the movie's promotion days, then that was the Oscars. Instead of stepping out in an elaborate pink outfit inspired by the movie, Margot toned down the palette with a slinky black strapless gown by Versace. Some fans were underwhelmed, others just didn't expect it. Some even dubbed the outfit to be a "funeral" to the press tour of Barbie since Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were snubbed in their respective nomination categories for the film. But following fashion content creator Holly Agnes' theory, many have come to believe another reason for the demure Oscars appearance. The reason she claims for not seeing Margot's "method dressing" was to not detract attention from co-star and Best Supporting Actress nominee America Ferrera.
America Ferrera who was otherwise seen in darker tones in contrast to Margot Robbie's flamboyant pink outfits during the movie promotions gave it all up for her moment to shine. For the Oscars red carpet, the co-stars swapped the colours for the red carpet event. America, also in Versace was seen shining in pink. Holly observed, "By swapping colours, they swapped attention. It was totally intentional, and the right thing to do". America Ferrera shined like she was destined to and on that night, nothing else mattered. It also reels back to the movie where America's character rediscovers herself at the end and rests her faith in strong female friendships.
Margot Robbie honoured the film with a host of pink outfits, many of which were recreated looks from the original Barbie dolls. If there is one thing we can all agree on this awards season, it is that the Barbie-inspired outfits were the true winners after all.
