From Aishwarya Rai's 600 Sarees To Madhuri Dixit's Rs 15 Lakh Lehengas, Devdas Is A Fashion Classic Even 19 Years Later

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's classic magnum opus production Devdas was everything Bollywood has always been about. Drama and flamboyance in true Bhansali style - Devdas was and is one of his most exceptional productions to date; a visual treat, complete with its opulent sets and costumes. As much as everyone packed in on the drama front, the fashion and styling of this film set precedence for many movies to follow. Every set, meticulously designed, every costume, intricately embroidered - that's the beauty of Bhansali's Devdas that became a mainstay for all his films from there on even up until 19 years later of its release date. Aishwarya Rai's and Madhuri Dixit's individual styles from the film dictated the fashion of the time and looking back now, we're not surprised why.

Madhuri Dixit's extensive list of costumes were all nothing short of spectacular, all designed by ace couturiers Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla were reportedly priced approximately at Rs 15 Lakhs each. The famous song Kahe Chhed Chhed Mohe saw Madhuri Dixit had a moment of her own but her 30 kgs weighing ghagra wasn't one to shy away. It was eventually replaced with one weighing nearly 16 kgs to swifter movement. She also wore another ghagra that took 2 months complete by hand by artisans.

If Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla were exclusively responsible for Madhuri Dixit's outfits, Neeta Lulla was the designated designer for Aishwarya Rai and her extensive saree collection for the film. Not one or ten but nearly 600 sarees were purchased from different shops in Kolkata to bring Paro to life. Many sarees were mixed and matched to create layers to create an even more graceful drape that often took near 3 hours to drape. Contrary to the usual 6 metre sarees, Aishwarya Rai was draped nearly 9 metres of cloth for a more grand effect.
