We got talking with Shaan Shah, COO of Freakins and Avadat Studio to find out what is it like to be a youngling in the crowd
1. What made you come up with a brand only devoted to denim?
Shaan Shah: "For me, it was about finding a market which had not already been explored. We noticed that there was no brand in India creating only denim wear for women. We saw a remarkable increase in demand for high streetwear which we wanted to make affordable and available to everyone. Although we have now tapped into cotton and knitwear, our main focus will always be denim and we continue to come up with new denim styles as well."
2. What according to you is the ultimate denim piece that every woman needs to own in her wardrobe?
Shaan Shah: "This one is a no brainer. Every woman according to me should own a basic, well fitted mid blue pair of denim jeans. A good fit is very essential for style and comfort. One should choose a mid-blue pair jeans for it to be worn multiple times over the years as they never go out of style."
3. Why is it so important for you to have a denim centric brand that delivers style but is also friendly on the budget?
Shaan Shah: "According to me, our brand is a dynamic brand with its focus on denim products. I personally believe a brand shouldn't limit itself to one category. We are ready to take on more challenges and opportunities with new styles, fabrics and demand as our brand grows. This is the reason we have tapped on different fabrics too to meet up with demands of the millennials apart from the changing styles in fashion. As I mentioned before, there is no other brand that has tapped into catering to only denim wear for women and we have some great unique styles in exceptional quality we want to make available to everyone and strive our best to continue doing so."
4. As a young entrepreneur yourself, how do you ensure to keep up with the changing styles of denims and demands of the millennials?
Shaan Shah: "I appreciate the changing trends in denims from time to time, because it suggests that we are constantly developing and creating something new. That in itself is a challenge. To cater to the continuous changing trends we feel it's important to have a larger sampling team which has complete freedom to develop n number of samples every week. Right now we launch around 20-30 new styles every week that we are thoroughly proud of. Our styles can be seen on many young women and the response we have received on our ever evolving styles to meet up with demands is overwhelming."
5. Freakins is a homegrown label. What measures are you taking to make sure your denim apparel is part of a whole sustainable ecosystem?
Shaan Shah: "Denim is versatile and a water-consuming fabric and we understand that our brand is young and resonates with the youngsters who understand adverse effects of fashion on the environment. Sustainability is the need of the hour and to keep that in check we are moving towards a 30% eco-friendly products. Having said that, we are also changing all our packaging to 100% compostable plastic covers."
Denims can be a statement piece if you choose it to be - the way you style it and carry it off all depends on how your jeans are too. If there is anything, jeans push you to be your best version of yourself. So bring out those ripped pair of jeans in your wardrobe that has not seen the light of day because they're going on a field trip today!
