You do your best to keep your health in check at all times, but why not look after your hair as well to ensure it's thick, flowy, and nourished? We tend to use several hair care products, get regular hair spas done, use organic, sulfate-free shampoos and indulge in DIY hair masks, but often a silly mistake that we tend to overlook and ignore is that we secretly damage our tresses by combing, detangling or tying them when they are wet. We don't realise but our hair is the weakest post a wash. When we come fresh out of a shower, it is then that the protein that makes up the hair i.e. keratin, forms weaker hydrogen bonds, leaving the hair open to damage, breakage, and roughness.
Keeping this in mind, there are certain wet hair mistakes that you might want to avoid if you want strong and healthy-looking hair.
Wet Hair Mistakes That You Need To Stop Right Now
Here are 5 common wet hair mistakes:
1. Tying Wet Hair
With the soaring temperatures these days, while doing a hair wash is quite satisfying, the urge to tie them up or make a bun to avoid sweating and heat is equally high. When the hair goes from wet to dry, it often changes its elasticity and shrinks. We need to remember hair is vulnerable when wet, if you tie them, as soon as you remove the rubber band or the tie, you will find it full of hair. The best alternative is to use a clip or hairpin in such cases.
2. Sleeping With Wet Hair

If you shower at night and sleep immediately after that, it will give rise to bacterial and fungal growth. This can also lead to skin acne and pimples, dry hair, dandruff etc. As frightening as it may sound, you might end up having blocks of hair on the other side of the pillow. To avoid such problems, it is advisable to use a silk pillow than a cotton one which will reduce the growth of bacteria and curtail the damage.
3. Styling Wet Hair With Tools

Applying hot tools on dripping wet hair has damage written all over it. When we quickly want to dry our hair after hair wash for stepping out or for styling purposes, we straight away use a hairdryer, curling iron, or other such heating tools. Either semidry the hair or keep the heat temperatures at moderate if you want to style your hair. The better way around would be to wait for the hair to dry completely and then use heat tools. This is a simple and smart step that can prevent hair from burning or excessive breakage.
4. Harsh Brushing

Often, we find our hair tangled after a hair wash and end up harshly combing them. One should always apply a serum or a conditioner before combing, or if you need to get ready, take a smaller section of hair in hand and gently comb your way down. Even if you detangle the locks, bear in mind to go for the correct kind of brush, which has softer bristles.
5. Rough Hair Drying
Post a shower, using some rough cloth to dry the hair can be harmful to your tresses. With the hair follicles being the weakest at this point, instead of going rough on them, try using soft fabric towels, rub them, gently squeeze them to let the dripping water out, and not tie them unless completely dried.
While there are many errors, we tend to make that can often lead to hair loss and damage, the most common ones are associated with wet hair. So, the next time you see your locks dry, rough, and damaged, think about these often-overlooked mistakes.
