10 Expert Tips On How To Wear Print On Print And Ace The Trend
How to get print on print right like a pro

There's no denying the fact that prints are an instant attention grabber. It's no surprise therefore to find prints creating quite the buzz, with print on print being one of the most popular fashion trends. Why stop at one statement piece when you can mix and match your entire attire to let prints take over? Print on print makes for a bold style statement, which is probably the reason why most people find themselves overwhelmed while playing around with prints. It's all about following a few basic rules to ace the trend like a pro.

We bring you expert tips from fashion designer Saaksha Bhat from the label Saaksha & Kinni on how to style print on print. The label is known for its bold prints, metal and stone embroidery techniques.

"Print on print for a full ensemble can be quite overwhelming to many, and at times quite intimidating to try. What is important for you to remember is that don't be afraid to mix and match prints. Mixing of prints done the right way can be exquisite," says Saaksha Bhat.

How To Style Print On Print

Saaksha Bhat shares the following tips to style print on print:

1. Minimum Accessories

One approach is to keep accessories to a minimum - when it is a head to toe bold print, avoid any jewellery or hats. Let the attire do all the talking. Accessories tend to clash and get in the way of print on print. The ensemble can then come across comical rather than chic.

2. Choose Complementary Colours, Shapes

Mixing of prints done the right way can be exquisite. When trying this, it is important to choose complementary colours and abstract shapes. For example, a polka dot print shirt can be paired with striped trousers. Another cool option is to pair the same print in two different colours.

3. Size Matters

Also try mixing different sizes of the same print. For example, thin stripes in a shirt pair really well with thick striped trousers or a skirt. Have fun with the different sized prints by playing with proportion.

4. Stick To No More Than 2 Different Prints

More than two can get quite messy and comical. This rule applies to your handbag and shoes - keep them neutral.

5. Floral Prints

Florals can be the toughest prints to mix and match with themselves. One tip is to opt for a monochrome floral print mixed with a multicolour floral that includes the original monochrome colour. For floral prints, pair darker floral tops with lighter floral trousers/skirts. By keeping the visual balance right, it creates an optimum look.

6. Monochrome

When in doubt go completely monochrome. When you stick to classics like black and white you can take on just about any two prints.

7. Clashing Prints

When you combine two completely opposing prints it creates a winning look. Smaller, fine stripes are paired well with bold graphic prints. The contrast works well together and creates a contemporary feel.

Clashing patterns with the same colour scheme go hand in hand. No matter how bold they may be, as long as you stick to the same or similar colour palette, it won't be a disaster.

8. Choose A Dominant Colour, Print

When pairing a bold print with a more delicate one, pick out one colour from the bold print and pair it with a delicate print that utilises only that one shade.

Another way to safely mix prints is to choose a dominant print and the secondary as a mere accent or supporting role.

9. Patterns

Where using the same pattern, invert the colours to create a cool modern look. You can also break up patterns with a belt for a cohesive look.

10. Fit And Flare

Another cool way to do print on print is to mix prints between tailored and flowy pieces. For example, a fitted printed shirt with a flowy printed gypsy skirt.

Other than the above tips, when in doubt, polka dots and stripes always work!
