Kolkata: Thai monk accused of stealing ancient rosary found

Varanasi: A Thai monk and his twoaccomplices, who allegedlystole a 15th century sandalwoodrosary of Sant Kabir from his ashram in Varanasi last week, have been found in Kolkata,police said today.


The rosary, whichwas gifted to Sant Kabir by his Guru,went missing from the sanctum sanctorum of theKabir ashramlast Saturday and the incident came to light on Sundaymorning.


An FIR was lodgedat the Chetganj police station againstthe Thai monk and his two accomplices by thecaretakers of theashram, who suspected them of stealing the rosary.

Superintendent of Police Rajesh D Modak said, "We havegot a location in Kolkataof the Thai monk and his twoaccomplices and a police team has also been sent there."

An alert was sounded at all airports in this regard,Modak said, adding thatprobe is going on in this case.The Thai monk, who has been visiting the ashram since thepast three years, hadrequested for meditating inside thesanctum sanctorum of the ashram for five minutesand theashram administration gave him permission.


The caretakers ofthe ashram later alleged that the monkreplaced the original rosary with a duplicateone.
