3 Sentenced To Life in Manipal University Gang-Rape

Manipal: Three men found guilty of gang-raping a student at Manipal University in Karnataka in 2013 have been sentenced to life imprisonment. The three main accused were also fined Rs 1.1 lakh each.

Two other men who were found guilty of destroying evidence in the case were sentenced to three years and fined Rs 5,000 each by a court in Udupi on Thursday.

In June 2013, a young woman leaving the library on campus late at night in the university town of Manipal on the coast of Karnataka, was dragged into an autorickshaw and gang-raped.

She was then dropped back to near where she was staying. The incident had shocked the small town as the campus had been seen as a safe place until then.

Manipal, along the Karnataka coast, is home to at least 27 colleges and nearly 21,000 students from across the country.
