The special investigation team (SIT) that is probing the death of Assam's cultural icon Zubeen Garg has filed a chargesheet at a local court in Guwahati. The famous singer's cousin, Sandipan Garg, has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the chargesheet.
Sandipan Garg had accompanied Zubeen Garg on the visit to Singapore for an event.
The other accused named in the chargesheet for murder are festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen Garg's manager Siddartha Sarma, bandmate Sekhar Jyoti Goswami, and co-singer Amritprava Mahanta.
The personal security officers, Paresh Baishya and Nandeshwar Bora, are also named in the chargesheet.
The SIT brought the chargesheet documents in three large boxes. The chargesheet also comes nearly three months after Zubeen Garg's death in Singapore in September, a loss that left fans in Assam, the north east region and other parts of the country in deep mourning.
"It is a meticulously done investigation and the chargesheet runs over 12,000 pages. It proved the case with independent documents... Now it is over to the court... The motive has been clearly tracked and examined by the advocate general... This is a case in which conviction is possible," Sarma said today.
The case has seen extensive investigation. The SIT team even flew to Singapore and questioned close to 300 witnesses
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the state assembly recently said Zubeen Garg's death was a murder, and the SIT would make a watertight case.
Heavy security was deployed on the route that the SIT took to reach the local court today. The chargesheet is expected to provide clarity on the circumstances leading to Zubeen Garg's death. The authorities believe the document will shed light on key aspects of the investigation, which has been going on for months.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF), carrying out an independent investigation into Zubeen Garg's death, had said in a statement that preliminary probe has not indicated any foul play, and that the investigation may take up to another three months.
