What is PM Modi Doing on Lalit Modi? Congress Questions

Lalit Modi, the former Indian Premier League Commissioner, has been in the UK since 2010

New Delhi: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in London for a three-day visit on Thursday, the Congress said he should ask his British counterpart David Cameron to facilitate the return of tainted cricket boss Lalit Modi, who has been in London since 2010.

"Earlier independent analysis has shown that foreign visits have brought very little other than selfies and the enhancement of brand Modi," Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said.

He said if PM Modi does not ensure the former Indian Premier League Commissioner's return, "then people of India will firmly believe what the Congress has been saying, that the elder Modi is helping the younger Modi."

Asked if the Congress would again stall Parliament with their protest on Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj allegedly helping Lalit Modi gain travel documents, Mr Surjewala said: "If PM Modi gets Lalit Modi back, that won't be required." The winter session of Parliament begins November 26.

On Tuesday's announcement by the government on opening up Foreign Direct Investment in 15 sectors ahead of PM Modi's visit to the UK, the Congress said it supports FDI but would study the specific proposals.

"When the United Progressive Alliance opened up FDI in December 2012, Modi Ji had tweeted that it is a sell out and being done because of the danda (pressure) of the CBI. We want to ask Modi ji is he sure that it is now not a sell out? Is he sure that there is no danda (pressure) now?" the Congress party's communication department chief.

The enhanced limits for Foreign Direct Investment were announced on the heels of the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies losing the Bihar elections badly and amid criticism that PM Modi's reforms push is slackening.
