IMD Weather Live Update: Residents across Delhi-NCR woke up to cloudy skies, cool winds, and a noticeable drop in temperature on Friday morning, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert warning of severe weather conditions in the region.
According to the IMD, Delhi and its adjoining areas are likely to witness spells of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds throughout the day. Wind speeds are expected to range between 40 and 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph in some areas.
The weather department has also forecast thunderstorm activity across several parts of northwestern India, including Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and adjoining regions. In isolated locations, hailstorms are also likely. The IMD has predicted thundersqualls with wind speeds of 60-70 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph, over Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan.
Meanwhile, the red alert comes after a dramatic change in weather conditions late Thursday night, when strong winds and rain swept across parts of Delhi-NCR. Several areas in Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram experienced gusty winds, lightning, and showers that provided significant relief from the prevailing heat.

Weather Updates LIVE: IMD Issues Red Alert For Thunderstorms, Lightning In Delhi
Delhi has been placed under a red alert for Friday night as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of moderate thunderstorms, lightning and squally winds reaching 60-70 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph, across the city.
The weather office said that very light to light rain is likely at most places, while isolated areas may receive moderate rainfall.
A red alert signifies the need to take action and follow safety advisories issued by authorities.
Officials advised people to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees and stay away from electric poles and waterlogged areas.
According to experts, the weather activity is being influenced by a western disturbance over the hills, with rain also expected over Punjab, Haryana and Delhi during the night and on Saturday.
The city recorded a sharp drop in temperatures on Friday. At Safdarjung, the maximum temperature settled at 34.6 degrees Celsius, 5.3 degrees Celsius below normal.

The meteorological department has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall at several places in Rajasthan, offering likely relief to people from the prevailing intense heat conditions.
According to officials, strong winds and rain are expected in parts of the state over the next two days due to the impact of a western disturbance.
On Friday, Jaisalmer recorded a maximum temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius, while Phalodi registered 43.8 degrees, Fatehpur 43.0 degrees, Barmer 42.7 degrees, Bikaner 42.4 degrees, Churu 42.3 degrees and Sikar 40.5 degrees Celsius.
The Jaipur Meteorological Centre said that due to recent rain activity, temperatures have dipped in several regions.
In the last 24 hours, parts of Bikaner, Jaipur and Bharatpur divisions witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder.

Weather Updates LIVE: El Nino Conditions Currently Present Over Equatorial Pacific Ocean: IMD
The India Meteorological Department on Friday declared the onset of El Nino conditions over the equatorial Pacific Ocean.
It also said these conditions are expected to strengthen further during the southwest monsoon season.
"The atmosphere has responded to the warming sea surface temperatures, and the coupled ocean-atmosphere system now exhibits characteristics consistent with El Nino conditions," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The last time El Nino conditions developed was in 2023. Since 2000, these conditions have emerged in 2002, 2009 and 2015.
El Nino is one of the three phases of the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a climate phenomenon characterised by changes in sea temperatures along the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, accompanied by fluctuations in the atmosphere overhead.
While El Nino is known to have a warming effect over the planet, its opposite phase, called La Nina, usually results in a cooling effect. ENSO also has a neutral phase.

The Meteorological Centre Bhopal has issued a fresh warning of volatile weather conditions across Madhya Pradesh over the next five days, highlighting the likelihood of thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, gusty winds and heat waves in several districts.
The forecast comes amid the ongoing advance of the southwest monsoon, which has already covered parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, West Bengal and Bihar. Conditions remain favourable for further progress into Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh in the coming days.
According to the latest bulletin issued by the Bhopal centre, moderate thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning and gusting winds up to 70 kmph is expected tonight over Niwari, Orchha, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Chhindwara, Seoni and Singrauli.
