Weather Highlights: It's raining! The southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala, marking the beginning of rainy season (June - September). This year, the monsoon has arrived three days late, contrary to its usual arrival around June 1. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kerala during the next week.
From Kerala, the monsoon is expected to take about a week to travel northwards into Telangana. The IMD on Wednesday announced the withdrawal of heatwave alerts across Telangana, noting that temperatures have begun to subside due to evolving weather patterns.

3 Days Delay In Southwest Monsoon "Within Standard Deviation": India Meteorological Department
Southwest monsoon was delayed by three days this year, and this, according to the India Meteorological Department, is within the standard deviation.
"The Southwest Monsoon is delayed by three days as the normal date of onset of monsoon over Kerala is June 1 with a standard deviation of seven days. Thus, the delay by three days is within the standard deviation," said Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology at the India Meteorological Department.
Conditions Favourable For Further Advancement Of Southwest Monsoon
Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, entire Goa, and parts of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
Monsoon will also advance to some more parts of Karnataka, remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, Southwest Bay of Bengal, some more parts of Westcentral, Eastcentral and Northeast Bay of Bengal, some parts of Northeastern states during the next two to three days.
Southwest Monsoon Sets In Over Kerala
The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of Southwest and Southeast Arabian Sea, some parts of westcentral and eastcentral Arabian Sea, entire Lakshadweep islands, Kerala and Mahe, some parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, remaining parts of Comorin area, southeast Bay of Bengal and some more parts of southwest, westcentral, eastcentral and northeast Bay of Bengal today.

Yellow Alert For Rain, Thunderstorm In Delhi
Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 29.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for rain and thunderstorm.
Station-wise data showed a minimum temperature of 27.6 degrees Celsius at Palam, 0.4 degrees above normal; 28.4 degrees Celsius at Lodhi Road, 1.4 degrees above normal; 27.5 degrees Celsius at Ridge, 1.4 degrees above normal; and 28.4 degrees Celsius at Ayanagar, 2.3 degrees above normal.
The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 38 degrees Celsius.
Rain Likely In Delhi On Friday, June 5
Intermittent rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely across Delhi-NCR on Friday.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the national capital will experience partly cloudy to generally cloudy skies over the next few days. A yellow alert has been issued for Thursday and Friday, warning of light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Wind speeds are expected to reach 40-50 kmph, with occasional gusts touching 60 kmph.
Moderate Rain, Thunderstorms, Lightning Likely In Chennai During Next 24 Hours
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in Chennai and its suburban areas during the next 24 hours, offering relief to residents from the prevailing hot weather conditions.
Heavy Rain Alert For Tamil Nadu Districts
Heavy rain has been forecast for Tenkasi and Tirunelveli districts, besides the hilly and adjoining regions of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet and Tiruvannamalai districts.
Weather Department Warns Of Very Heavy Rainfall In Kanyakumari District
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of very heavy rainfall in Kanyakumari district and heavy rain in several other parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, as the southwest monsoon is set to make its onset over neighbouring Kerala.
Kanyakumari is likely to receive very heavy rainfall over the next five days due to strengthening monsoon conditions.
Kerala Rain: Heavy Rain Expected In Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam
Parts of Kerala have been witnessing heavy rain since the last night. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now issued an orange alert in three districts - Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam - for three hours.
The weather agency said that thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and maximum surface wind speeds reaching 40 kilometers per hour were likely in parts of the state.
The IMD has also predicted the likelihood of thunderstorms with moderate rainfall and maximum surface wind speed reaching 40 kmph in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Thrissur districts.
Heatwave Alerts Withdrawn Across Telangana
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday announced the withdrawal of heatwave alerts across Telangana, noting that temperatures have begun to subside due to evolving weather patterns.
Speaking to the news agency ANI, IMD Hyderabad Meteorologist GNRS Srinivas said that while the state had been reeling under intense heat since mid-May, the situation is now gradually improving.
"From around the 20th of May, Telangana state has been experiencing very high temperatures, particularly in the North Telangana and East Telangana districts. We have seen heatwave conditions prevailing for longer periods of 6 to 8 days, both in North Telangana and East Telangana in many of the districts," Srinivas said.
The meteorologist explained that a shift in atmospheric conditions has provided much-needed relief to the region.
"However, since the last two to three days, some synoptic situations have evolved, whereby temperatures have started to come down. Since the last two days, we have withdrawn the heatwave alerts over North Telangana and East Telangana also," he added.
