Briefcase Found Abandoned At Amritsar Airport, Bomb Squad Called In

The Amritsar airport area where the unclaimed bag was found has been cordoned off.

Amritsar: After an abandoned briefcase was found at the Amritsar parking lot this morning, a bomb disposal squad is visiting the site. The area has been cordoned off. Amritsar is just 40 km from the border with Pakistan.

Yesterday, there were security concerns about the air force base at Pathankot, a two-hour drive away. The sprawling base was targeted early last year by terrorists dressed in uniform; seven military personnel were killed in a lengthy attack.

The base was put on high alert along with a massive search operation in the area following intelligence inputs about suspicious men being seen in the area.

Senior police officer Nilambari Vijayjagdale said more than 500 security personnel and helicopters were used to check the area and surrounding villages.

Captain Amarinder Singh, 75, will be sworn in tomorrow as the new Chief Minister of Punjab; the Congress has regained control of the state after 10 years.
