TRS lashes out at Prime Minister's statement on Telangana

Hyderabad: Hours after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke of going ahead on Telangana only after a consensus, pro-Telangana leader KT Rama Rao lashed out  at what he saw as the Congress doublespeak, saying there have been five different statements on this issue by the party in recent weeks.

"We totally condemn the attitude of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his statement made yesterday. The Prime Minister refuses to see the reality; he is in a state of denial is what we believe. He has got scant respect and utter disregard for the democratic aspirations for the people of Telangana. With his one statement, the Prime Minister has insulted the people of Telangana and their democratic aspiration. The Prime Minister's statement truly reflects the mindset of the Congress party which is full of hypocrisy and double standards," the TRS MLA said.

Telangana Congress leaders also warned that matters could get worse for the Congress party in the region. Said Madhu Goud, a Telangana Congress MP, "Repercussions will be harsh. By this statement of the Prime Minister, there may be much more hatred feeling among the Telugu people. The so called 'movement' which goverment is taking shelter under is orchestrated and funded by rich Congress MPs like Lagadapati to KVP to Jaganmohan Reddy and even Chandrababu Naidu.''

Goud and other Pro-Telangana members say UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi is now their only hope.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, on his way back to India last night from the SAARC Summit, had told journalists that there won't be any final decision about the separate statehood for Telangana unless there is consensus from all concerned.

"Telangana is a complicated matter and we are trying to evolve a consensus where all shades of public opinion would agree that what is being done is in interest of each and everyone. We cannot solve the problem of Telangana by agreeing to Telangana being while there is disquiet and unrest in other regions of Andhra Pradesh from frying pan to the fire is not an appropriate solution to national problem," Prime Minister said onboard his special aircraft.

Dr Singh was replying to a question from journalists while returning from Maldives as to what his government was doing in Andhra Pradesh where a serious situation has evolved on Telangana issue.

"As for an appropriate solution, we will work to find a practical ways and means so that all the stakeholders can agree to accept a solution," the Prime Minister said.

The Supreme Court, on Friday, rejected a plea to restrain the Centre from carving out a separate Telanganga state saying it was "too premature" and sought response from the Andhra Pradesh government and Telangana Rashtra Samiti over concerns that normal life has been paralysed due to the agitation.
