Trinamool Leader Arrested In Tripura, Party Alleges Attack By "BJP Goons"

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress alleged "mayhem" in BJP-ruled Tripura on Sunday as its leader, actor Sayoni Ghosh, was arrested by the police and accused of attempt to murder. Alleging repeated instances of violence, the party decided to take the matter to Delhi.

  1. More than 15 Trinamool Congress MPs flew from Kolkata to Delhi on Sunday night. They have sought an appointment with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the issue of violence in Tripura. 

  2. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew and Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee landed in Agartala this morning, and condemned the police action, stressing that the party's roadshow has been banned.

  3. Trinamool's Bengal youth wing chief Sayoni Ghosh was detained by the Tripura police earlier on Sunday. The party said she was attacked by BJP goons when she was taken to a police station in Agartala for questioning.

  4. Ms Ghosh was accompanied by other party leaders including MP Sushmita Dev, Kunal Ghosh and Subal Bhowmik. The party said all of them were attacked inside the East Agartala women police station. Six supporters were injured in the violence, the party said.

  5. Denying the allegations, the BJP claimed that Sayoni Ghosh disturbed a public meeting of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday. She had hurled stones and abuses at the meeting, the party said.

  6. The police said some unidentified miscreants attacked a group of people who had gathered near the police station during the questioning of Ms Ghosh, but no one was injured. The police station, they said, was brickbatted.

  7. Ms Ghosh was later formally arrested, accused of attempt to murder and creating enmity between people. The Trinamool Congress said she was charged with non-bailable sections and could not be produced in court.

  9. Late in the evening, Sushmita Dev tweeted, alleging fresh violence. "They have attacked the Thana again where @sayani06 is under arrest and also attacked our Convenor Shubol Bhowmick's house in Agartala. @Tripura_Police I have been trying to call the IG & DGP but to no avail. This is mayhem".

  10. There have been reports of a series of violent incidents in Tripura as the Trinamool Congress is trying to gain foothold in the state ahead of the 2023 assembly elections. The party is contesting the Tripura civic polls, due on November 25.
