Trinamool Cheers for AAP, But Party Says 'Thank You, But No Thank You'

AAP workers celebrate in Kolkata.

Kolkata:

Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was among the first leaders to congratulate Arvind Kejriwal on his Aam Aadmi party's stunning victory in the Delhi assembly elections.

The West Bengal Chief Minister tweeted, "My congratulations to all the Delhi voters, AAP workers and leaders for big victory. Well done to you. All my best wishes. We are very happy".

Minutes later, in a strongly-worded tweet, she said, "This is a victory for the people and a big defeat for the arrogant and those who are doing political vendetta & spreading hate among people."

On February 4, quite out of the blue, Ms Banerjee had used her social media account to urge voters to vote for the AAP..

For those wondering whether this indicated the possibility of any kind of political coalition, the AAP workers celebrating in Kolkata seemed to have a message: 'Thank you, but no thank you'.

"We are not going to tag along with any other party in West Bengal," said Alok Chaturvedi, who was the party's candidate in the Kolkata North seat in the Lok Sabha polls last year.

Mr Chaturvedi, and the 50-odd AAP supporters who talked to reporters in Kolkata, also targeted the Trinamool Congress government in the state.

"What was promised in 2011 (the year TMC came to power), none of that has happened," he said.

"A lot of scams have been revealed. Growth as promised has not taken off. No major industry has been set up here. Education is also in a mess. Lots of things that were promised, nothing has happened" he said.

So what is the party's response to the possibility of a coalition with the TMC? "Thank you, but no thanks," said AAP leader Amiya Chakravarty.

But the Trinamool seems to be basking in some of the glory of the AAP's victory. "Today is Aam Aadmi day.We are in the dressing room and cheering. We stuck our neck out for AAP, it' a big victory for them," said Trinamool Member of Parliament Derek O'Brien.
