Tamil Nadu: Deemed varsity students protest
Salem: There are reports of students' protests at three deemed universities in Tamil Nadu facing derecognition.

Students of Vel Tech University in Chennai, Prist University in Thanjavur and Vinayaka Missions' University in Salem reportedly went on the rampage. Police had to resort to mild lathicharge on students in Salem.

The Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that it has decided to withdraw the "deemed" status to 44 universities in the country. (Read: Centre to derecognise 44 deemed universities)

The Centre alleged these were being run as family fiefdoms rather than on academic considerations. (Read: List of universities to be derecognised)

However, to avoid jeopardising the future of nearly two lakh students enrolled in these universities spread over 13 states, they would be allowed to revert back as affiliated colleges of their original universities, the Centre said in an affidavit.
