'She's Still My Wife': Aligarh Professor Denies 'WhatsApp Divorce' Charge

Professor Khalid Khan had sent two 'Talaq' or divorce messages to his wife on WhatsApp.

Lucknow: An Aligarh Muslim University professor accused by his wife of divorcing her on Whatsapp denied it emphatically today and said: "She is still my wife".

"I haven't given her triple Talaq. I divorced her verbally, sent the same via post and WhatsApp. After a month, I divorced her verbally and sent it via SMS. She is still my wife. There was never a third divorce," said Professor Khalid Khan, a Sanskrit professor.

Professor Khan's wife has not just gone to the police against him but has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath alleging that he has violated a Supreme Court order banning instant triple talaq by uttering the word "talaq" or divorce three times.

The professor had sent two "Talaq" or divorce messages on WhatsApp, alleged his wife. She also told the police she had been "tortured" and locked out of her home.

"She requested us to settle the matter. The police informed the professor about the settlement process but he did not turn up before the settlement officer," said senior police officer Rajesh Pandey.

He said a case has been registered against the professor for harassment.

The professor told reporters yesterday that going by the law, he had served two notices on his wife for divorce - in October and this month - and was preparing for the last one.

He also claimed he had documentary evidence that his wife had "misled" him about her past.

"I have documents to prove that my wife had pledged to change her behaviour and save our marriage," he said.

Professor Khan said he had given up his official bungalow to avoid confrontations with his wife.

Today, he seems to have reversed his stand.
