Prisoners attack jail staff with cricket bats in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: It was a routine check at the Cherlapally Open Air Jail on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The jail staff were checking to see if any prisoner had a mobile phone on Monday, when they were attacked by some undertrial prisoners.

The jailors reportedly suspected that some phones had been smuggled into the jail. When they were conducting searches in the Papagni block of the jail, where those under trial in terror-related cases are lodged, the prisoners attacked them with cricket bats.

A deputy jailor, Hanuman Prasad, is reported to have been seriously injured. Two wardens also sustained injuries.

Some other reports said the undertrials attacked the jail staff as they were upset that their religious books had been damaged.
