Mumbai Audi Accident: Accused Janhavi Gadkar Sent to Judicial Custody Till June 26

The Audi Q3 that crashed head-on into a taxi in Mumbai, killing two people on Monday night.

Mumbai:

Advocate Janhavi Gadkar, who crashed her Audi Q3 car into a taxi in Mumbai late on Monday night, has been remanded in judicial custody till June 26. She has filed a bail plea that will be heard on June 15.

The police had asked for her custody for two more days, claiming their investigations were not complete and they wished to check if she had visited the Irish pub that night and consumed more liquor. But the defence argued that she had not been given proper medical treatment in police custody despite being injured.

The police's argument is that she was so intoxicated that she does not remember where she took the wrong lane. "If she was intoxicated how could she tell them? There is a contradiction in their statement," argued defence counsel. "If remand is required merely to verify her statement, there should be judicial custody."

During questioning, the 35-year-old lawyer had said that she had visited a restaurant and met her colleagues, where she consumed two pegs of whiskey to celebrate a new project, the police have claimed. Later she slept inside her car at the Marine Drive for two hours to get sober, she reportedly said.

Sources told NDTV that Ms Gadkar had visited a second pub on Monday night to meet an executive and it is suspected that she had consumed more alcohol there. The police are examining the CCTV footage from the pub, whose waiters are also to be questioned.

Sources also said the 35-year-old executive may have lied about sleeping in the car on Marine Drive for two hours.

Tests showed Ms Gadkar's blood samples had three times the permitted level of alcohol on the day of the accident. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 30 mg of alcohol is the permissible limit for driving.

Two people traveling in the taxi were killed in the head-on collision later that night.
