- A monkey was filmed grieving and hugging an 85-year-old woman in Karnataka after her death
- Parvatamma regularly fed and cared for monkeys near her home, forming a strong bond with them
- The monkey stayed close to her body during funeral rites, showing visible signs of sorrow
A heart-wrenching video capturing the extraordinary bond between a human and a monkey has gone viral. In Rayara Doddi, Karnataka, a monkey was filmed weeping and hugging the body of 85-year-old Parvatamma, who passed away on Monday (Mar 30) from age-related illness. The primate's visible grief and refusal to leave the woman's side have touched the hearts of social media users.
For years, Parvatamma maintained a ritual of feeding the monkeys that strayed near her home. While many viewed the monkeys as a nuisance, Parvatamma treated them as companions, offering them food and love. Over time, the bond strengthened, which was visible during the funeral rites.
As Parvatamma's body lay at her residence for final respects, one of the monkeys approached the gathering. Instead of searching for food, it walked calmly through the crowd and sat quietly by her side. The monkey pressed its head to Parvatamma's and closed its eyes, seemingly aware that this was perhaps the last moment with the woman who had been looking after him.
Reacting to the video, social media users highlighted that animals never forget when someone shows them kindness. "The way that monkey hugged her shows how deeply love transcends words and species," said one user, while another added: "The real human beings but we call them animals."
A third commented: "Kindness is a seed that blossoms into a bond even death cannot break. A beautiful soul returns to the earth, escorted by the love of the wild. The purest form of gratitude. Simply heartbreaking and beautiful."

'Kerala's Hachiko'
This is not the first instance when the bond between humans and animals has transcended death. In 2023, a loyal dog, dubbed 'Kerala's Hachiko', waited outside a mortuary in Kannur after its owner died. The dog kept waiting for the owner over the course of four months outside the district hospital.
"The patient died and the dog saw the owner being taken to the mortuary...The dog feels that the owner is still here. The dog does not leave this place and has been here for the past four months," Vikas Kumar, a staff member at the District Hospital in Kannur, said at the time.
